5 Ways to Ease Yourself Into The New Season

As the days get shorter and cooler, are you feeling a little “off”? Maybe your sleep schedule has shifted, or your muscles feel tighter. Perhaps you don't have quite the same energy or motivation you had a few weeks ago.

Changes in daylight, temperature, activity levels, and daily routines can all affect how we feel physically and mentally. And here in New Hampshire, where the seasons change dramatically, our bodies sometimes need time—and a little extra care—to adjust.

I try to remind myself of this when I get up for my early fall morning runs, and it’s still dark outside.

Here are five ways to ease yourself into the new season:

1. Get Outside During Daylight Hours.

Natural daylight helps reinforce your body's sleep-wake cycle. Even a short walk outside—especially earlier in the day—gives your body natural light, plus the added benefits of fresh air and movement.

2. Keep Moving.

Activity levels can easily drop when the weather changes. Walking, stretching, strength training, yoga, or another activity you enjoy can help maintain mobility and keep your body from becoming stiff. The goal doesn't have to be a strenuous workout. Consistent movement matters!

3. Protect Your Sleep Routine

Try to keep your bedtime and wake time relatively consistent even as daylight changes. A quieter evening routine and less late-night screen time can help your body find a new rhythm and get the sleep you need.

4. Pay Attention to What Your Body Is Telling You

Are you more tired than usual? Do you have a stiff neck or shoulders, or an aching lower back? These may be signs that your body is adjusting to changes in activity, routine, or stress.

Instead of waiting until this discomfort becomes significant, give yourself permission to slow down, stretch, move, rest, or seek help when you need it.

5. Make Time to Relax

Rest isn't something we earn; it’s something we need. Giving your body opportunities to relax can help manage everyday stress, especially during busy seasonal transitions.

How Massage Can Help During Seasonal Transitions

Massage can't stop the seasons from changing, but it can give your mind and body an opportunity to slow down, relax, and reset.

A change in your routines and activity levels can also cause tension to show up in different places. Maybe you've been sitting more, exercising differently, spending weekends raking leaves, or simply carrying more tension through your neck and shoulders.

Massage can help release muscular tension while also giving you dedicated time to step away, slow down, and give your body a little extra care.

Give Yourself Time to Adjust Between Seasons

Nature doesn't move from one season to another overnight, and neither do we. As the days get shorter and our routines change, pay attention to what your body needs.

Maybe it's a little more sleep.

Maybe it's a walk outside.

Maybe it's stretching, exercise, some quiet time—or a massage.

Taking care of yourself doesn't require a major lifestyle overhaul. It simply means recognizing when your body needs some extra attention and giving yourself permission to provide it.
