In today's complex and fast-paced world, we often zero in on what we lack or the challenges we face. Yet, research suggests that if we learn to focus more on what’s good in our lives, we will be happier.
Being grateful can improve mental and physical health, strengthen resiliency, and help you develop and maintain stronger relationships—all of which make you a happier person!
Cultivating an Attitude of Gratitude
So, what steps can you take to cultivate an ‘attitude of gratitude’ and become healthier, stronger, and happier?
Keep a Journal
Incorporating gratitude into your daily routine doesn’t have to be complicated. Start small by keeping a gratitude journal or notebook and listing three things you're thankful for each day. This simple practice can rewire your brain to focus on the positive.
Write a Note
Consider how others positively impact your life and thank them with a note, text, or heartfelt conversation. These positive interactions with the people you care about will surely release some “feel good” emotions.
Get Outside
Take a walk and breathe in your surroundings—there’s so much to be thankful for in the great outdoors.
Reframe Your Thinking
Reframing how you view your daily experiences—even the hard ones—can contribute to a more grateful mindset. For example, instead of thinking, “Ugh. I need to spend my whole Saturday decluttering my basement.” Think, “I am grateful that I CAN clear out my basement so I can feel more organized.”
Keep it Consistent
As the ancient Greek tragedian Aeschylus said, Happiness is a choice that requires effort at times. Whatever you do to develop a sense of gratitude, make it consistent—it could be one of the best things you do for your health!
Speaking of Gratitude…
To my massage therapy and fitness coaching clients: Thank you for allowing me to be a part of your lives! I am grateful for the opportunity to help you improve your mental and physical well-being. Doing so brings me much satisfaction and happiness! —Marilyn
