Massage Tips from Akasha Massage in Concord, NH
Ask any massage therapist, and they will tell you that a massage is more than just a relaxing experience; it's an essential part of caring for your body, calming your mind, and promoting overall wellness. Whether you are new to massage or a veteran, here are some tips on how to make the most of your session.
1. Schedule mindfully.
A massage isn’t something you want to squeeze in between errands or meetings. Try to schedule an appointment when you know you won’t feel rushed before or after. Schedule your massage late enough that your body is fully awake, but early enough that you can enjoy a relaxed rest of your day.
>Post-massage tip: Avoid scheduling strenuous activity or intense workouts right after your session to allow your muscles to experience the benefits of massage.
2. Don’t show up with a full stomach.
Since a full stomach can interfere with your ability to fully relax during a massage, avoid eating any heavy food about one to two hours prior to your session. Instead, opt for some fresh fruit, a nourishing smoothie, or a small salad.
>Post-massage tip: Rehydrate with water and eat a light, protein-rich snack.
3. Drink water before and after your massage.
Staying hydrated will help your muscles respond more effectively during your massage and support your body’s natural detoxification afterward. This is why I offer my clients a bottle of water after every session.
4. Tell me what you need.
I tailor every session to your specific needs. Let me know if:
You prefer quiet time or light conversation during your session
You want me to adjust the room temperature
You have any injuries, sensitivities, or chronic areas of tension
You want more or less pressure
Note: If there is anything else I can do to help you make the most of your massage, please don't hesitate to let me know.
5. Focus on your breathing.
While a massage offers many physical benefits, it also allows your nervous system to rest and reset. Take slow, deep breaths (inhaling through your nose and exhaling through your mouth) to help deepen the relaxation process and boost the effectiveness of your session.
6. Calm your mind.
We’re all busy, and at times it’s hard to shut everything off so we can truly relax. Here are some ways to quiet your mind:
Count your breaths (inhaling for four counts and exhaling for six) to focus inward.
Center your thoughts by repeating a calming word or phrase (such as “relax,” or “let go”).
Visualize a peaceful place—a beach, forest, or anywhere you feel calm and at ease.
Give yourself permission to let go and trust your therapist and body to take care of the rest.
7. Don’t rush getting back to your day.
After your session, take your time sitting up and getting off the massage table, allowing yourself to slowly return to your day. Massage therapists build in time between sessions for this purpose.
>Post-Massage Tip: To extend the benefits of your massage, schedule some quiet time or a restorative activity (such as a walk or a hot bath) after your session.
8. Establish a routine.
Whether you are managing chronic tension, pain, or stress, getting a massage on a regular basis will help you feel your best—mind, body, and spirit.
