Take Your Workout Outside: The Benefits of Connecting with Nature

In today’s fast-paced world, hectic schedules and increasing screen time can make it easy to feel disconnected from nature—and even from our own bodies. When life starts to feel a little too “plugged in,” one of the simplest ways to reset is to take your workout outside.

Beyond offering a change of scenery, outdoor exercise provides many benefits:

1. It improves your mood and overall well-being.

Need a break from all the noise, screens, and fast pace of life?  Being in nature has been shown to reduce stress and help calm the mind. Research from Stanford University found that time spent in natural environments can significantly reduce rumination (repetitive thoughts that can increase stress and anxiety). Even a short walk outdoors can improve mental clarity, lift your mood, and leave you feeling more balanced.

2. It boosts your vitamin D.

Sunlight is a natural source of Vitamin D, required for bone and immune health. Spending time outdoors while moving your body lets you soak up these benefits while you enjoy the fresh air.

3. It challenges your body in new ways.

When walking, running, or biking through a park or on a trail, the varied terrain engages and challenges multiple muscle groups, improving your balance, coordination, and strength.

Did You Know? Massage is a great complement to working out because it can help release muscle tension, increase flexibility, and speed up recovery.  Schedule a Massage with Marilyn.

4. It helps energize and motivate you.

Working out in the fresh air and sunshine can make exercise feel more enjoyable and less like a chore, helping you to stay active.

Tips for Outdoor Workouts

If you’re planning to take your workout outside, here are some simple tips to keep in mind:

Mix It Up: Alternate between walking, hiking, biking, and bodyweight workouts outside. Changing your routine works different muscle groups and keeps things more interesting.

Stay Hydrated: Water is essential to maintaining energy levels and preventing fatigue—especially on warmer days.

Dress for the Weather: Wear comfortable, seasonally appropriate clothing, and don’t forget to apply sunscreen and insect repellent as needed.
